Sad Geek Weekend…

Well, it only leaves me to wonder who will be number three as the saying goes.

First up was Leslie Nielsen who died this weekend at 84. He was the star of two of my favorite comedies, Airplane! and the Naked Gun series. Surely he was most famous for his comedies (And don’t call me Shirley!), but was also a mainstay of television in the sixties and seventies. His other iconic role was that of Commander J. J. Adams in the classic science fiction film (and another of my favorites.) Forbidden Planet.

Today followed Irvin Kershner who passed away at the age of 87. Most famous as the director of the best Star Wars film ever made, The Empire Strikes Back, he also directed the less than iconic RoboCop 2  as well as Sean Connery in his return to the Bond franchise, Never Say Never Again.

I’d always hoped that George Lucas would convince Kershner to come out of retirement and helm one of the Star Wars prequels. Kershner was able to bring out a human side to Lucas’ creation that Lucas himself seems unable to tap.

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and watched Empire or Forbidden Planet in their entirety. It looks like I’ll have to make some time to do so again.
